Procedure uses computer controlled laser to reshape cornea. Surgical procedure to correct Myopia,Hyperopia and Astigmatism.LASIK is acronym for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis
1. Patient is given sedative and eye is anesthetized.
2. Computer-guided scalpel cuts thin layer (flap) of cornea.
3. Flap is lifted and moved to the side.
4. Laser is carefully aligned over cornea.
5. Computer-controlled laser burns away tissue to reshape cornea
6. Flap is returned to original position.
7. Patient is observed for 1 hour and needs assistance driving home
1. Depends on amount of correction required
2. With low to moderate myopia
3. Over 90% achieve 20/40 or better
4. About 50% achieve 20/20
5. With high myopia (more than –12D) or high hyperopia (more than +4D), fewer achieve 20/40 or 20/20
6. Complication rate is less than 2% after two years
1. Greater the correction, longer the time to heal
2. Eye sight usually improves immediately
3. For several months Night vision might be poor,Some patients see glares, halos, and starbursts in dim conditions, Dry eyes need frequent eye drops
4. Eye sight continues to improve for six months
